The Danger of Smoking Natalie Gibbs Section 042 Ages 11-19
Everyday 3,000 teens light their first cigarette. • 4.5 million teens smoke • 90% of adults smoke • 70% of smokers wish that they could quit • Cigarettes contain nicotine, a highly addictive substance • Cigarettes also contain chemicals that are in rat poison • Smoking increases heart disease, lung disease, and cancer The Facts
How I faced Smoking From the first time that my friend offered me one cigarette to the time I finally quit and the 7 years between, the one thought that stayed constant in my head was why? Why did I ever start?
I couldn’t go 2 hours without smoking • I was affected in my career in needing breaks constantly, and doing something that effected my work. • I had lung and chest pains daily • I had a cough that wouldn’t go away • I always stunk • My friends and family were constantly asking if I had quit yet How Smoking Impacted My Life
What I thought was good… What I overlooked… The depression was getting worse The pains in my body were small and not important The hunger would go away The feeling of being judged was just others problems, they were in the wrong, not me • I was less tired at times • I had a rush of energy • I liked the taste • I felt full and satisfied • I felt like I could keep going How Smoking Made Me Feel
I tried over and over to have my last cigarette and not anymore • It was a constant failing circle • I had to do something new • I started having one less each day, soon I was down to 7 a day. • The last week was the hardest, especially the last 3 days • The last day when I had my last cigarette was 9 months ago What I Did About It
I feel healthier, I can breath better, my constant smoker cough is gone • I feel happier, more alert, more energetic then I once was • I am now a nurse working in the healthcare field, helping others each and every day • I feel free and enjoy each and everyday of my life Where I am today in Life
Don’t light up, not even one • Just say No • Don’t give in to peer pressure • Whatever you see in movies or on TV, smoking is not cool • Remember, starting is a dangerous and long road, please don’t every say yes My Advise to YouListen
The best thing you can do in this life is to never start. Don’t pick up that first cigarette thinking one won’t hurt. It will lead to a life changing habit that is difficult and for some, impossible, to break. Don’t START!!!
