Compromise • “a settlement of differences by mutual concessions; an agreement reached by adjustment of conflicting or opposing claims, principles, etc. by reciprocal modification of demands” (dictionary.com) • Positively: Proper at times, 1 Cor. 6:7; 8:13; 9:22 • Negatively: It is capitulation, referring to a surrender of objectives, principles, or material” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compromise)
The Sin of Compromise • Solomon and wives, 1 Kgs. 11:1-8 • A great sin against God • God’s blessings and conditions, 1 Kgs. 3:5-9, 10-14; 9:3-9 • Solomon’s compromise stirred God’s anger and led to Israel’s division, 1 Kgs. 11:9-13
The Sin of Compromise • We are warned against moral and doctrinal compromise • Come out and be separate, 2 Cor. 6:14-7:1 • No other gospel, Gal. 1:6-10 • Have no fellowship with the darkness of sin – expose it! Eph. 5:8-11 • Do not go beyond doctrine of Christ and do not receive those who do, 2 Jno. 9-11
Sinful Compromise • Is double-mindedness, Jas. 4:4, 8 (1:8); Matt. 6:24 • Stands by instead of rebuking and resisting sin, 1 Kgs. 11:7-8 (5); 1 Sam. 3:13 • Truth will not continue to flourish in such an environment, Gal. 2:4-5 • Causes indecisive faithlessness, 1 Kgs. 18:21 (Josh. 24:15)
In Compromise • The heart is turned away from God, 1 Kgs. 11:2, 9 (Deut. 6:5) • The militant spirit of the gospel is replaced by a (so-called) positive approach toward sin and error • Must not quarrel, 2 Tim. 2:24-26 • Must engage the enemy! 1 Tim. 6:12; Eph. 6:17; 2 Cor. 10:3-5; Jude 3; Jer. 6:14
In Compromise • Love for God becomes secondary, Mk. 12:29-30; Matt. 6:21, 31-33 • Due to lawlessness, Matt. 23:12 • Due to neglect, Rev. 2:4-5 • Must keep your heart pure to avoid compromise, Jas. 4:8 (1 Tim. 1:5); Phil. 4:8
