    8. The Protestant Reformation The movement was to reform the Catholic Church. The Christians who protested wanted to return to basic Christian teachings and came to be called Protestants. Martin Luther was the first Protestant leader to form his own church which taught in German and not Latin. John Calvin was the leader of the Puritans who freedom in the Americas to practice their own religion.

    12. The Columbian Exchange Europeans unknowingly brought to the Americas diseases such as measles and small pox which infected and killed millions of Native Americas. Traders transported more than 20 million Africans to the Americas as enslaved persons.

    14. Parliament Great Britain developed a system of shared power and responsibility. The king ruled with the Parliament. Eventually kings and queens were forced to accept a constitution that shared power but gave most of it to the Parliament.

    15. American Colonies The American colonies gained their independence from Britain in the 1770s.

    16. The French Revolution In 1789 the French Revolution began. King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette were executed. By 1799, Napoleon Bonaparte, a hero of the French Revolution, became the dictator of France. He declared himself emperor. People reacted against Napoleon and he was defeated in 1815.
