Elements of the Scientific Revolution • Natural law- truth could be found through reasoning (scientific method) • Scientific method- steps of finding truth through observation and experiment (observation, hypothesis, conclude) • Deism- religious philosophy based on reason and natural law(rejected church, but believed in God) • Pacifism- oppose violence/war to settle disputes

Famous People • Copernicus-earth is round, rotates, and revolves around sun • Kepler- proved Copernicus correct using scientific method • Galileo- more support for Kepler; laws of gravity; inertia • Bacon- helped develop the scientific method • Descartes- wrote Discourse on Method; to find truth, doubt the existence of everything; “I think, therefore I am” • Isaac Newton- scientist/mathematician- gravity holds the earth and solar system together

Famous People (cont.) • Thomas Hobbs- Believed in absolute gov’t control because people are naturally violent No gov’t = chaos • John Locke- believed in order and gov’t, but rule by people; people are naturally reasonable and moral; people deserve life, liberty, and property • Thomas Jefferson- based on separation from Europe (Declaration of Independence) on John Locke’s theory • William Penn- founded Quaker Colony in Pennsylvania based on theory of pacifism
