Advanced User Support - Update Amit Majumdar SDSC 2/24/11
Outline • Three categories of AUS • Operational Activities • AUS.ASTA • ASTA examples • AUS.ASP • AUS.ASEOT
Three Categories of AUS • Advanced Support for TeraGrid Applications (AUS.ASTA) • AUS staff work on a particular user’s code (some community codes) • Guided/initiated by the allocations process • Advanced Support for Projects (AUS.ASP) • Project initiated by AUS staff (jointly with users) – impacts many users • Optimally install software, maintain, train users • Advanced Support for EOT (AUS.ASEOT) • Advanced HPC/CI trainings • Participate in workshops, tutorials (TG11, PetaScale workshops, SCXY) • Interaction with other CI programs PlantCI, DataNet etc.
Update on Operational Activities • Bi-weekly telecon (currently as needed) among AUS POCs from every RP site • Matching of AUS staff to ASTA projects, discussion about ASP, EOT activities • Program plans, annual reports etc. • Web/Tele-con among AUS technical staff • Biweekly technical tele/web-conference on ASTA and other projects - using readytalk • Slides and recorded audio archived at: http://teragridforum.org/mediawiki/index.php?title=Technical_presentations
ASTAs • From quarterly report of 4th quarter, 2010 • 48 ASTAs reported • 7 completed in that quarter • 1st quarter of 2011 • 11 ASTAs initiated (of which 2 are renewal, 1 startup) • 2 other ASTAs – waiting for PI reply • Total current ASTAs: 48 -7 + 11 -2 = 50(some are more active than others depending on PI’s interaction level)
ASTAs...continued • ASTA “allocation” reminder news posted before every TRAC deadline • Around 12-15 ASTA requests/TRAC coming in • In between there are Startup/Supplemental requests • Now there is mechanism in POPS to record ASTA “allocation”
Some Successful ASTA Examples (there are many more) • SCEC SC10 paper Gordon Bell finalist – results possible due to significant ASTA effort over years from many ASTA staff from multiple RP sitesYifeng Cui, Amit Chourasia (SDSC) co-authors in SC10 Gordon Bell finalist paper • Significant improvement in scaling of Voth group’s multiple program implementation of LAMMPS code • Phil Blood (PSC) experimented, benchmarked and determined the optimal MPI rank placement of processes (w and w/o all-to-all) on Kraken to achieve this • PI Engel’s ASTA – Meng-Shiou Wu (NICS) enabled scaling improvement of code • Dealt with serial I/O of input file, removal of extra buffer copy related to MPI_Bcast, replacing send/recvs with MPI_Bcast
Advanced Support Projects • Six projects • Benchmarking Molecular Dynamics codes (SDSC, PSC) • Completed first phase • Benchmarking Materials Science codes (PSC, TACC, LONI) • Completed first phase • Hybrid Programming model for multi-core (TACC, SDSC, PSC, NICS) • Collected 4 white papers on this topic from AUS staff • Exploring possibility of publishing via AUS projects page
Advanced Support Projects…cont.. • Investigation/benchmarking of PGAS languages (TACC initially; others will join later) – • MPI, UPC comparison ongoing • Performance, profiling tools (PSC) • Completed - TAU tutorial and documentation posted on AUS projects page • Software/database to monitor apps usage on resources (NICS) • Completed (and moved into operational mode) • Helps US staff in software management
ASP Webpage Doc group has helped in setting up the AUS projects webpage After Liferay migration it is at : https://www.teragrid.org/web/user-support/aus_projects
Advanced Support EOT….some examples • AUS staff continue to teach HPC/CI tutorials at RP sites, (expected) TG11, SCXY etc. • Intro HPC workshop at Puerto Rico universities: Marcela Madrid, Mahidhar Tatineni, Sergiu Sanielevici, Amit Majumdar • AUS staff involved in organizing/participating in PetaScale Workshop series (next one at Pittsburgh, Data Intensive Analysis, Analytics, and Informatics, April 14-15) • Participation in TG11 : currently organizing committee, reviewers • AUS staff reviews TRAC proposals – both as regular reviewers and as reviewers of smaller proposals (great help according to Kent Milfeld)
