Nouns • Can we give the definition of a noun? • A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or condition • Nouns both name things that can be seen and touched and things that cannot be seen or touched • For example, a noun can be • A thing: cicada, tree, store • An idea: justice, rebellion, peace • A condition: joy, illness, beauty
Practice Identify the nouns in the group. Name whether that noun is a person, place, or thing. Example: 1. Technician / Belief / Direct Nouns: Technician- Person, Belief- Thing • Insect / Flutter / Identification • Smelled / Scent / Labratory • Immature / Appearance / Swamp
Now That We Have An Idea... • Let’s talk about more specific types of nouns • A collective noun is a noun that names a group of people or things • So, we could have… • A swarm • A crowd • A herd • A committee
Nouns • A collective noun, however, is not to be confused with a compound noun • A compound noun is a noun that is composed of more than one word • Compound nouns can be written in a few different ways
Separated • A compound noun can be written as two words that are separated but still create one person, place, or thing • For example: • Bubble bath • Station wagon • Can you think of any other examples?
2. Hyphenated • Some compound nouns are written with hyphens between words to create the compound noun • For example: • Daughter-in-law • Hand-me-down • Can you think of any other examples?
3. Combined • These words are two combined nouns that create one new word • For example: • Shipwreck • Handstand • Can you think of any other examples?
Practice I would like you to pick out and write down the compound nouns in the following paragraph: A railroad worm, the larval form of a beetle found in South America, makes its own light. A flea has a broad jump of over 33 centimeters. Honeybees do a dance to communicate where a specific flower is located, and the queen bee of bumblebees gives birth to every bee that lives in her beehive.
The Two Groups of Nouns • All nouns in existence are in one of two groups: proper or common nouns • Proper nouns always begin with a capital letter • Proper nouns name a specific person, place, or thing • Common nouns, on the other hand, are just the ones that we see in everyday life • They are just normal words that we do not need to capitalize, because they are not specific
