Poland = limited monarchy • 1386 Jagiello (Lithuania) & Jadwiga (Poland) = Lithuanian-Polish state • largest kingdom in Christendom; ruled most of Ukraine, too • Sejm (assembly of primarily nobles) elected the king and kept tight reign on him – king must agree to share power with them • 1569 formal union of two crowns into Poland • 1572 Jagiello dynasty ends • 1587 election of Swede Sigismund III • Practice of electing outsiders as king

Poland = limited monarchy • Attempt to develop a Polish empire = Russia, Finland & Sweden BUT became weak and decentralized instead • Sejm put local interests above state • 1652 liberum veto: single dissenting vote could bring assembly to a standstill = political chaos • Poland = rising interest to foreign powers due to its size and proximity to Russia and the Baltic Dutch Republic
