  2. What is Figurative Language? Figurative language is language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation.

  3. IMAGERY • Language that appeals to the senses. Descriptions of people or objects stated in terms of our senses. • • Sight • • Hearing • • Touch • • Taste • • Smell

  4. SIMILE A figure of speech which involves a direct comparison between two unlike things, usually with the words like or as. Example: The sun was shinning as bright as a light.

  5. Metaphor • A figure of speech which involves an implied comparison between two relatively unlike things using a form of be. The comparison is not announced by like or as. Example: The road was a ribbon wrapped through the dessert.

  6. Onomatopoeia The use of words that mimic sounds. Example: The fireworks made a loud KA-Boom!

  7. Hyperbole An exaggerated statement used to heighten effect. It is not used to mislead the reader, but to emphasize a point. Example: The teacher told the students a thousand times to be quiet.

  8. Personification A figure of speech which gives the qualities of a person to an animal, an object, or an idea. Example: The wind yells while blowing.

  9. Idioms An idiom is a combination of words that has a meaning that is different from the meanings of the individual words themselves. It can have a literal meaning in one situation and a different idiomatic meaning in another situation. It is a phrase which does not always follow the normal rules of meaning and grammar. Example: "Hold your horses," I said when my friend started to leave the store.
