The Logistics of it All Premise…. The NDLS courses do not come together by “MAGIC”… • There are several considerations above and beyond just presenting the various course modules of any NDLS course. • There are many things that must happen in the background each time a course is presented that allows the instructors to deliver their presentations effectively… especially when considering the ADLS and NDLS-DECON courses…. NDLS-I Student Objectives • NDLS Instructors and Administrators will understand the various assets, equipment personnel and venue requirements needed to effectively present any NDLS course • The various administrative and support personnel needed • Logistical and Technical considerations • Establish the number, and type, of personnel necessary to effectively present each course ADMINISTRATIVE - LOGISTICAL - TECHNICAL SUPPORT
Equipment Equipment lists are included in your Instructors Guide • Even if you are only presenting CDLS/BDLS you will need a place to store manuals, AV equipment, signage and so on. • If presenting ADLS/NDLS-DECON storage, inventory and maintenance requirements will become a MAJOR CONSIDERATION! Personnel Various personnel are crucial to the effective presentation of any NDLS course… • Administrative Support • Logistical Support • Technical Support • Trained Instructors • “Stage Manager” ADMINISTRATIVE - LOGISTICAL - TECHNICAL SUPPORT
Administrative Support • Consider…finding clients, building a staff of instructors, setting up business agreements, invoicing, registration, processing registration and CEU paperwork, coordinating classes, assigning instructors, travel arrangements, invoicing, grant management, financial management, paying the bills, data entry…. And much more! ADMINISTRATIVE - LOGISTICAL - TECHNICAL SUPPORT
LOGISTICAL SUPPORT • Consider… • Ordering and replenishing supplies • Researching new equipment • Inventory Control • Maintenance of equipment and supplies • Delivery of the equipment (who’s driving the truck?) ADMINISTRATIVE - LOGISTICAL - TECHNICAL SUPPORT
TECHNICAL SUPPORT • Consider… • Someone must set-up the equipment and troubleshoot any problems at the venue • Someone must be able to set-up, troubleshoot and operate the required AV equipment. • The Moulage for the Mass Casualty/MASS Triage exercise must be applied. TECHNICAL SUPPORT • Consider… • The setting up, running and troubleshooting of the Human Patient Simulators is a major consideration. • Programming and tweaking the HPS scenarios • Dealing with the various computer issues that crop up • Maintaining and demonstrating the communications equipment • Investigating, recommending and implementing new technologies ADMINISTRATIVE - LOGISTICAL - TECHNICAL SUPPORT
INSTRUCTORS Consider… • Reliability • You will need instructors that are flexible and able to step in and make several different presentations for any class. • Not every instructor must be medically trained… • Key to presenting any NDLS course is to develop a core Instructor and Support Personnel staff. Cross training is crucial! ADMINISTRATIVE - LOGISTICAL - TECHNICAL SUPPORT
THE STAGE MANAGER Consider… Instead of assuming that everything will automatically come together at the right time (it won’t) have one person in charge of the overall presentation…. A “Stage Manager” so to speak…. • Ideally the Stage Manager will be well versed in ALL ASPECTS of the programs. • He or she will handle the direction of all of the various assets required to make the presentation and would also be the primary “problem solver” on scene. • Keep in mind that every NDLS course is actually a production requiring many different elements to be working together simultaneously to be an effective learning experience for the students.
