Solution to Multiple Logins • Ctrl + Alt + Delete • Change password • Require school login password: • Minimum 8 characters • Include at least one uppercase character • Include at least one lowercase character • Include at least one number • Require use of that same password on ALL websites and other resources How I Use OneNote to Begin IT Academy
What I Used To Do • Start withMS PowerPoint (or MS Word) • Talk about an online test that they’ve never seen or experienced • Spend 3.5 to 4 weeks teaching PowerPoint Skills (or longer) • Assign vocabulary quizzes and projects that reinforce skills BUT look nothing like the MOS exam • Assign PowerPoint projects that help with future classes BUT look nothing like the MOS exam • Spend another week for projects and test prep • Have students perform mediocre at best on the MOS Exam (and feel jealous of other schools with better success rates) How I Use OneNote to Begin IT Academy
What I Do Now • Start with MS OneNote • Spend about two weeks teaching OneNote Skills • Use IT Academy online lessons • Only four lessons • Projects are short and relate directly to lesson/test objectives • Create a login information page • Spend about a week test prep’ing and taking the MOS exam • Use a study guide (created as a OneNote Notebook) • Start MS PowerPoint at start of fourth week • Students know what to expect • I teach PowerPoint using same method, same resources
Benefits of Starting with OneNote • Is a quick unit • Start to finish, less than 3 weeks • Is a new application to most students • Keeps interest engaged during start of semester • A lot of OneNote is pretty intuitive • Students see usefulness immediately • Projects are designed to help students use OneNote for other classes, activities • Exam experience • Students now know what a MOS exam 'feels' like How I Use OneNote to Begin IT Academy
Students experience ALL elements of class • All new logins and passwords are set up • Same logins • All websites explored, bookmarked • eLearningwebsite explored • Vocabulary and Hot Key (shortcut) quizzes • Lesson style experienced • I teach the Exercise (demo) • Students do the Projects (application) • Send me their files via teacher website • MOSexam experienced • Students KNOW how to prep
Results • Spring 2012 • Less than two dozen MOS certifications earned, mainly in PowerPoint • Did NOT teach OneNote • Fall 2012 • Over 90 certifications (out of 130 students) by Thanksgiving • Named as a top five school in WA at year’s end (based on number of MOS certs earned) How I Use OneNote to Begin IT Academy
