Committee’s charge: • Develop five-year vision document based on Fall Conference reports and recommendations • Identify action items that could be substantially achieved within next twelve months • Define measures of progress or success from the perspective of campus community • Prioritize recommendations, especially those involving major resource commitments • Publicize recommendations widely

7. Premise: IT is important • A university is an "information industry" where knowledge is key • Use of this knowledge often entails IT as a tool or conduit • IT has become a necessity for members of a university • Scientists, educators, students, and administrative staff require information technology to achieve their goals • IT is essential for collaboration, expression, creation of new knowledge, and innovation in science and the arts • IT is infrastructure, much like electricity, telephones, buildings • Universities that invest in robust and modern IT have a significant competitive advantage over those that do not

Simple, powerful vision for UC Davis: • Become a campus that is internationally recognized for its development and use of information technologies (IT) in support of innovation and excellence in teaching, scholarship, and engagement. • Actions recommended in four major areas: 1. Enhancing campus IT infrastructure 2. Enabling community building and collaboration for teaching and scholarship 3. Promoting IT innovation and excellence 4. Establishing methodology for prioritization of IT needs • Leads suggested for further action

15. Funding • Vision of the 2007 Chancellor’s Fall Conference: Making UC Davis a campus internationally recognized for its development and use of IT in support of innovation and excellence in teaching and scholarship, and acting on the recommendation. 1. Some investments in IT would be aligned with other university goals, not leading to additional costs. 2. Some investments in IT would require a re-prioritization of the university’s goals. 3. In some cases, substantial efforts in planning and partnership- building are required, with one focus being innovative methods for acquiring funds in support of growing needs and costs of IT.
