Insights from NJIT's entering student and non-enrolling surveys, highlighting goals, ratings, influences, concerns, and improvements. Findings show focus on career, parental influence, and areas for enhancement.

Undergraduate – Entering Students Survey Fall 2011 Goals: NJIT students are focused on career and pecuniary goals. The top three goals are: • Attain skills that will be useful on a job– 80.15% Very Important* • Prepare for a career – 77.89% Very Important* • Improve ability to make more money – 53.65% Very Important* See appendix 1 for the complete data *Importance Scale:1=Not important, 2=A little important, 3=Moderately important, 4=Important, 5=Very Important
Undergraduate – Entering Students Survey Fall 2011 NJIT’s rating in comparison to other colleges: Entering students rated NJIT better/much better • In terms of academic reputation (72.47%), availability of majors (69.62), public safety (59.6%), quality of academic facilities (library, laboratory, etc.)(53.15%). • Total institutional price before financial aid (57.72%). • Electronic communication with the college (53.03%). • Contact with current students (51.14%). Undergraduate – Entering Students Survey Fall 2011 Contact/influence: • Most of the entering (64.66%) and non-enrolling (62.1%) students visited NJIT and other colleges. • Entering students reported college visit (53.18%) and contact with current NJIT students (42.82%) contributed most to student’s knowledge of NJIT. • Campus Visit/Information session has the most influence on entering student’s decision to attend NJIT (39.86%). • Most of the first year students attended New Student Orientation (97.74%) and were satisfied or very satisfied with the program(61.44%). Undergraduate – Entering Students Survey Fall 2011 Parents: • Most of the students’ parents graduated from college(62.63%), this is a 5.59% increase from 2010. • Parents have the greatest influence on the student’s decision to attend NJIT(36.5%).
Undergraduate – Entering Students Survey Fall 2011 Areas of concern/improvement: • Both undergraduate Entering student survey (61.86%) and Non-enrolling Undergraduate (UG) survey (65.9%) rated NJIT’s surroundings worse/much worse than other colleges. • Non-enrolling (UG) survey rated the attractiveness of campus (53.57%), academic reputation(43.83%) worse/much worse. • The undergraduate Entering student survey reported radio or TV advertisement; newspaper or magazine advertisement; and college guide book and websites contributed very little to informing students about NJIT. A similar pattern was exhibited in the Non-enrolling (UG) student survey. • Both undergraduate Entering student survey and Non-enrolling (UG) survey reported NJIT’s printed publications and NJIT’s social networking sites were the least influence on student’s decision to attend NJIT. Graduate – Entering Students Survey Fall 2011 Contact/influence: • Students’ decision to attend was most influenced by friends (26.65%), parents (15.99%), and college professor (15.67%). • NJIT website (63.97%) and the college professors (56.83%) were the top contributors to student’s knowledge of NJIT. • Campus visit/information session (39.85%) had the greatest influence on student’s decision to attend. Graduate – Entering Students Survey Fall 2011 Orientation: • 68.55% of the students attended the student orientation run by the Office of Graduate Studies. • 74.03% of them were satisfied or very satisfied with the outcome of the Office of Graduate Studies orientation. • 95.83% of the international students attended the student orientation run by the International Students Office. • 80.18% of them were satisfied or very satisfied with the outcome of the International Students Office orientation. Graduate – Entering Students Survey Fall 2011 Areas of concern/improvement: • Radio or TV advertisement (54.66%) and Newspaper or magazine advertisement (48.24%) were rated little/very little* to contributing to students knowledge of NJIT. • Printed NJIT publications (<1%), College guide books (4.69%), and NJIT social networking sites (5%) were ranked the least important factor on student’s decision to attend NJIT. • Graduate Entering student survey (41.41%) rated NJIT’s surroundings worse/much worse** than other colleges. • 51.67% rated their visit to NJIT about the same** compared to other colleges that they visited.
