Today’s Agenda • (1) Energy notes • (2) Energy quiz • (3) Energy video • (4) Vocabulary review
I. What is Energy? • Energy is defined as the ability to do work. This means that anything with energy can produce a force that is capable of acting over a distance. • The force can be any force, and it can come from many different sources.
II. Types of Energy A.Chemical energy – Energy in chemicals B. Electrical energy – Energy from electricity C. Radiant energy– Energy from light rays D. Thermal energy – Energy of heat
II. Types of Energy E. The energy of motion is called kinetic energy. F. The equation for kinetic energy is Ek = ½ MV2 G. The unit for kinetic energy is the joule
II. Types of Energy H. The energy of position is called potential energy. Potential energy comes from the presence of gravity. • The formula for potential energy is Ep = MGH M = mass G = gravitational acceleration (9.8) H = Height (in meters)
III. Energy Conservation • Energy can never be created or destroyed – it just changes form. • This is the law of conservation of energy.
IV. Energy Transformation • You can determine how energy changes and transforms. • Example 1: A ball is thrown up in the air and comes down 1. When the ball is first thrown, there is all kinetic energy (energy of motion). When the ball is at the half-way point, there is an equal amount of kinetic and potential energy. When the ball is at the top of the arc, there is all potential energy and no kinetic energy.
