  3. Temporary Government • The Congress created a temporary government for the Republic of Texas. • David G. Burnet – President • Sam Houston – Commander of Army • The Temp government’s job was to run the govt until an election was held

  4. Temporary Government • 1st Texas Congress was convened on October 3, 1836. • The Newly elected government began work on creating new Texas laws on October 22, 1836. • New President & Vice-President • President: Sam Houston • Vice-President: Mirabeau Lamar

  5. President Houston October 22, 1836 – December 10, 1838 • Commander-in-Chief of the Texas Army. • Moved the Capital from Columbiato Houston. • In favor of Annexation of the United States

  6. President Houston October 22, 1836 – December 10, 1838 • Army Troubles – Still Wanted Action • Native American Problems • Texas National Debt TX Constitution only allowed for Single 2-year term. President could not run for re-election

  7. Mirabeau B. Lamar December 10, 1838 – December 13, 1841 • Was Vice-President under Houston • Opposed Annexation • “Father of Texas Education” • Land/Oil Grants • Education Endowment Fund • Moved Capital to “Waterloo” • Later renamed “Austin”

  9. Houston (again) December 13, 1841 – December 9, 1844 • Tried to Eliminate National Debt • Created Government Jobs • Cuts size of the Army • Tried to Sell Navy (People said No) • Created temporary peace with Natives • Treaties

  11. Houston (Again) Mier Expedition • Texas Militia Caught • Soldiers were forced to choose beans from a Jar • Black & White Beans

  12. Houston (Again) • Works closely with United States to AnnexTexas • Sets Up deal for Annexationinto US but Houston’s term Ends.

  13. Anson Jones December 8, 1844 – February 19, 1846 • 4thPresident of Texas (Last President) • Works to finish Houston’s plan for Annexation to U.S. • April 1844 United States rejects US/Texas Treaty. • Polk Elected President of US (Nov 1844) • Polk Promised Texas Annexation if elected

  14. Anson Jones December 8, 1844 – February 19, 1846 • February 1845 US Congress agrees to Annex Texas • October 1845 Texas Accepts to US Annexation • The official ceremony was held on February 19, 1846 "The final act in this great drama is now performed. The Republic of Texas is no more.“

  15. Anson Jones December 8, 1844 – February 19, 1846 • In his final official act as president, Jones lowered the Texas flag from its pole; • Sam Houston, with tears in his eyes, stepped from the crowd to gather the flag in his arms. • Texas Becomes 28th State in the United States
