  1. 4th Amendment • Summarize the following in your notes in your own words: • The fourth ammendment states: People have the right to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated and no warrants shall issue but upon probable cause.

Controversial Pieces of SB 1070 • During a lawful stop, directs officers to determine immigration status of individuals who they reasonably suspect to be illegal aliens, and for all persons who are arrested. • Makes it a crime to harbor illegal individuals knowingly. • Authorizes officers to arrest an individual without a warrant if they have probable cause to believe the individual has committed any public offense that makes him/her removable from the U.S

Today • Objective: IWBAT explain different opinions of immigration and analyze how media presents biased views. • Relevance:It is important to understand how the media may try to shape our opinion on any topic, including immigration, so that we are able to critically think about the messages we receive, and be independent when forming our own opinions. • DOL: Given an exit card with a biased view on immigration (with at least 80% accuracy) SWBAT Identify the bias and justify how they know this; Predict, what would the other side argue about SB 1070?

Washington Post Editorial The Post’s View: Arizona’s bad immigration law takes effect By Editorial Board, Published: September 20, 2012 AFTER A TWO-YEAR struggle, a federal judge this week authorized Arizona law enforcement agencies to require officers to check the immigration status of anyone they suspect is in the country illegally. Wearing the wrong clothes, speaking with the wrong accent or having the wrong skin color could land you in hot water in Arizona. The state’s “show me your papers” provision — one of the most bitterly contested parts of the obnoxious immigration law enacted in 2010 — is the second such measure to receive a green light from federal courts. The first was from Alabama, where a similar policy was implemented about a year ago. There, according to a recent report by the National Immigration Law Center, an immigrant advocacy group, law enforcement officers have created an “environment of racial profiling” that has encouraged private citizens to discriminate and abuse people they regard as foreign. The report, based on thousands of calls to a hotline, recounted instances of Hispanics, including legal residents, who were repeatedly stopped by police on flimsy pretexts and, in some cases, subjected to prolonged roadside detentions. Provide examples of this article showing a particular bias.

  12. Forbes Say No To Amnesty “Comprehensive immigration reform” is a euphemism for amnesty. As such, reform will impose significant costs on the country. The primary effect of immigration amnesties in both the U.S. and Europe has been to attract more illegal immigration. An amnesty signals to potential border-crossers that if they can just get into the country illegally, they will eventually be given legal status. Illegal entries in the U.S. rose after the Immigration Reform & Control Act of 1986 went into effect and have increased fivefold from the 1980s to today. The vast majority of illegal aliens who have entered the U.S. since 1986 have been low-skilled, low-educated Mexicans and Central Americans; those groups will also make up the bulk of illegal immigrants most attracted by the current proposed amnesty. Mexicans, Salvadorans, Guatemalans and Hondurans made up 74% of the illegal population last year, says the Department of Homeland Security. Provide examples of this article showing a particular bias.
