WHO WAS SHI HUANGDI? • First Emperor of China • Ruled 221-210 B.C.E. • Unified China • Build the first Great Wall
HOW DID HE CREATE THE EMPIRE? • Prince Zheng of Qin • Born 259 B.C.E. • Used military, spies, bribes and alliances to conquer all the rival states • 221 B.C.E. gained control of all China • Adopted Legalism; ruled harshly to keep his power
How did he unify China? • Standardized the culture (made it the same through all of China): • Unified laws • Made money, weights, measures the same • Simplified writing system
What kinds of laws did he make? • Exact punishments for bad behavior • Rich and poor punished equally • Punishments included fines, forced labor, whippings and executions • Personally controlled government • Killed families of people who plotted against him • Exiled his own mother from court
How did he standardize money? • Only acceptable money was metal coins (no shells, pearls, silver or other objects) of gold or bronze. • Had holes in them so could be carried on a cord. • Special measuring cups made to hold equal amounts. • Metalworkers made bell-shaped weights of iron or bronze.
How did he standardize writing? • Got rid of many of the characters. • Created a dictionary of 9,000 characters.

How did Shi Huangdi protect the border? • Built a long wall along northern border • Connected smaller walls built by other kingdoms • Took 10 years and 300,000 workers to build wall. • Some workers soldiers, some people who had been exiled. • Many died working because of harsh conditions. • Wall stopped invasions because could not move horses over it. • Invaders would have no supplies if went over without horses or cattle.
Who opposed Shi Huangdi? • Confucian Scholars • Shi Huangdi executed them • Burned Confucian books • Marked people who kept books with a tattoo on their face and forced them to work • Executed those who talked about Confucian teachings. • Exiled own son for disagreeing with him.
How did the Qin Dynasty end? • Shi Huangdi died 210 B.C.E. • Buried in a gigantic tomb with an army of clay soldiers. • Dynasty fell apart; rebellions broke out • Harshness of his rule made people unhappy • Caused a civil war between leaders who wanted power • 206 B.C.E. Liu Bang defeated enemies and created Han Dynasty
