Choosing a RESEARCH DESIGN • Choosing a research design is a crucial step! • A research design specifies when and to whom interventions will be applied, what measurements will be used, who will take the measurements and also provides a framework for the evaluation • It is important to know the strengths and weaknesses of each research design method when planning your intervention/program.
Types of Research design • There are three major types of research design • Experimental • Quasi-experimental • Non-experimental
Types of Research Design Experimental Quasi-Experimental Have two groups No random assignment Comparison group should be similar to intervention group • Have an experimental and control group • Both groups have random assignment
Types of research design Non-experimental • Only has one group • Measures can be gathered before and after the intervention
Validity Internal Validity External Validity Assurance that the results of the evaluation can be generalized to other people and settings • Assurance that the program caused the change that was measured • Experimental design: has strongest internal validity • Non-experimental design: offers little control over internal validity
Randomization • Randomization means that each person in the population of potential participants has an equal chance of being selected or assigned. • Randomization is important for internal and external validity.
Randomization Random Selection Random Assignment Best way to achieve internal validity Each person has an equal chance of being in the different groups • Best way to achieve external validity • Subjects are likely to be representative of population
Choosing a research design • Researchers should have in mind the strengths and weaknesses of each research design when discussing or setting up their program or intervention • Should take into account what is the most feasible design for their program/intervention • Should strive to have high external and internal validity.
