Types of amphibians • Frogs and toads • Salamanders • caecilians
How they are important • Many species of reptiles and amphibians are known as indicator species • They indicate the pollution level in many environments most notably aquatic ecosystems
Vernal pools Vernal pools are small to large ponds that are only filled during spring. These pools are vital to many species of amphibians as they breed and lay their eggs here.
Some of the critters we will find • We will mainly find salamanders this time of year. • Some species we will probably find • redback salamander • two lined salamander • dusky salamander • slimy salamander • spring salamander • longtail salamander • spotted salamander • jefferson salamander • eastern newt • red salamander
Redback Salamander • Found in streams, and under rocks in wooded areas • Comes in two patterns red back and lead back
Two Lined Salamander • Found under rocks by streams
Dusky Salamander • One of the most common species • Found under rocks in moist wooded areas and by streams
Slimy Salamander • Found under things near streams • When agitated they secrete a very sticky slime
Spring Salamander • Found around and in springs and shallow streams
Long Tail Salamander • Named for its very long tail • Found in caves and around streams
Spotted Salamander • Found under things in woods or in vernal pools • Makes a migration every year to breed
Jefferson salamander • Found in vernal pools and under things in woods
Eastern Newt • Found in woods and in ponds
Red Salamander • Found in streams and springs
