July 15th 2011 – OGF 32 – Network Measurement Working Group Jason Zurawski, Internet2 Research Liaison The End
This is the end • ! • And what a long strange trip it has been. • 2001 (?) at one of the first couple of OGFs • Researchers from several different areas involved • Email archive goes back to 2004 • Heavy interest as projects started using in-progress work (2004->2007) • Waning interest … the software was done • Finishing standards was a side project for many • Day jobs got in the way
Beautiful friend • We have had a lot of help over the years. • Some remain, some long gone. • Common interests • Network Measurement • Network Classification • R&E + Commercial Networking • Software developers • Users
My only friend, the end • But, we have finished our work (?) • Document that will describe basic ideas • https://forge.gridforum.org/sf/go/doc15649?nav=1 • Formats being used in other WGs • NML • NSI • NMC
Of our elaborate plans, the end • Started w/ V1, V2 now involved in production code: • perfSONAR • OSCARS/AutoBAHN • ? • Demos over the years in many places • GEANT2 Technical Meetings • Terena • Internet2 Joint Techs/Member Meetings • Supercomputing • OGFs • Conferences …
Of everything that stands, the end • These projects have taken the torch • Into other working groups (NML/NSI/NMC) • Into extensions of the initial formats • Several releases of software, formats/protocols have stayed the same • Proof that things are “good”? • No plans of changing overall concepts • XML vs “something else” • JSON, Binary … • Do we care? • Web services vs stateful services • Do we care?
No safety or surprise, the end • Things will change … but we don’t need the WG anymore • Proposal: dormancy • We are basically dormant already … • Final steps • Put a GFD on the doc • Publish … ASAP but respecting the rules of how to close these things (certain amount of time, etc.) • Announce intentions to list (done today, do in a month)
I'll never look into your eyes...again • Or … NM WG becomes NM SIG • Treat it as a BoF at OGFs for people who still care about network measurements • Thanks!
