Thebiggestceremonytakesplace at the Atatürk Mausoleum in Ankara because Atatürk dedicatedthiseventtochildren. TRT bringschildrenaged 8 to 14 fromdifferentcountriesaroundtheworldtoTurkey. ThesechildrenstaywithTurkishfamiliesfor a weekandparticipate in childrens festival. Themostcommonsymbols of thiseventare; a globeor a circlesymbolizingtheworld. A group of children holding handssymbolizinunity.

Manyschoolchildrenparticipate in schoolperformancesfortheirparentstowatch. Politiciansmaygivepublicspeeches. WealsolaywreathstoAtatürk’smonumentsorwevisitAtatürk’smausoleum in ourcapital, Ankara. Wegotherebecause Atatürk builtourrepublicinspite of difficulties. He builtourrepublic on 29th october 1923 thenwe start tocelebrate it everyyear. RepublicDay is nationalholiday in Turkey. Ourtraditions in Turkeyincludessacrificing an animal in a specialritual, visitingrelativesandhelpingthepoor. • WHAT DO WE DO? • Itsone of theoldestIslamicholiday in Turkey. Itcomesabout 70 daysaftertheRamadanfeast. Accordingtooldbeliefitsunluckytogetmarriedor start a newbusiness in theperiodbetweenthesetwoholidays. Maybeits a superstation. InTurkeytraditionally, on thefirstday of this, men of eachfamilygoto a mosqueforpraying. Insomeregionspeoplepaintthesacrificeanimalwithhennaandadorn it withribbons. Inrecentyears, westartedmakingdonationstocharities. Wegivespecialcaretohelpthepoorduringthe festival of sacrifices. Wecutcalfs, sheeps, goatsetc. at thiseventandwemakebraisedmeats w/ them. This is a traditionfor us.

Wewearourbestclothesandwecall it ‘bayramlık’. Wehave an alternative name forRamadanits ‘ SugarFeast’ turkishshadowplayssuch as karagöz andhacivatare popular duringtheRamadanfeast.
