Time Management • Create a semester schedule: Due dates, test dates, and other important events • Hourly-Based weekly schedule • Schedule time for daily activities like: Eating, Sleeping and Exercizing • Plan for a minimum of 2 hours of study time for every hour in class
Time Management contd. • Schedule time for fun and flexibility • Use a daily TO DO list to accomplish goals and prioritize task • Learn to say NO!!!! • Spend 15-20 minutes a day per class reviewing notes. AVOID MARATHON STUDY SESSIONS!!!!!
Dorm Life VS.Commuting • Different living experience • Do not have to worry about getting up early for transportation, just walk • Take a nap in your room if you have a break between classes instead of waiting around for next class. • Are you a morning person??? • Schedule time for traveling • Think about cost: monthly, weekly, or just tokens. • If you drive think about parking cost • Lastly if you live close its cheaper to stay at home.
Dorm Life • First, set up a meeting with your roommate or suite mate, in order to plan out household tasks • Second, meet new people on your floor, it gives you the opportunity to network with others. • Third, get yourself an alarm clock, something that will get you up for class in the morning, since your parents aren't around to do so. • Fourth, gain responsibility for your own actions, since you now have freedom to what you want.
Commuting • Pros: Commuting enables you to have your own room, personal place, etc • You can enjoy a real home cook meal, instead of campus food • You do not have to move all of your clothing, and personal objects into a dorm • Cons: Commuting can be difficult when catching buses…. With acknowledging that you might miss it • You must schedule classes with less time gaps
Financial Aid • FAFSA • You will receive no money for school if not completed • Must be renewed every year • Understanding your award package • Work Study • Grants • Scholarships • Loans • Subsidized vs. Unsubsidized • Read what you sign and keep copies for future reference. • Have reference to all scholarship contact information. • Become familiar with your school’s financial aid office.
Work study • Grant received from the government in financial aid package • Find a job on campus • Fit hours into your class schedule • Work enough hours to receive the amount of money awarded through your grant
Cost of Living • Tuition • Food- shopping for dorm &/or meal plans • Books/ School supplies • Clothes/Footwear • Personal items- (soap, toothpaste, lotion, etc.) • Parties
Benefits of Tutoring! • Firm understanding of your difficult course • Improves the attitude toward the subject • Higher GPA • Teacher/Student Relationship • Build Networks with Upperclassmen/Peers • Increase your motivation to learn • Improves ones self-esteem • Improves educational climate “Remember the only dumb question is the one you don’t ask!”
Getting Involved • Join organizations/clubs • Intramural Sports • Volunteer and do Community Service
How We Do Things At Temple!! • Free, Fun, Fridays at the S.A.C. (Student Activity Center) • The Reel- on campus movie theater • The Pearl – off campus movie theater a few blocks away • Student Pavilion- basketball courts, tennis courts, outdoor track, volley ball, bad mitten • IBC ( Independence Blue Cross)-workout classes, weight room, indoor track • Pearson Hall- swimming pool, basketball courts
Liacouras Walk- socialize, 7/11, PNC Bank, Diamond Dollar and Housing Office, Saxby’s • Paley Library– Open until 2am, place to hang out also • TECH Center – Open 24 hours a day, except Sundays. Has tons and tons of computers available for use. Also has a star bucks located inside
