Center Motivated by Events in California • Major reorganization of California corrections to include “rehabilitation” in mission • CDCR acknowledgement that programs were often funded based on opinion and anecdotes • New effort by CDCR to put science before politics
UCI Center Established in 2005 • Located in UC Irvine’s School of Social Ecology • Funded by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation • Coordinates with CDCR Office of Research in Sacramento
The Center’s Mission is Threefold • To identify promising programs and evidence-based practices from the scientific criminological literature • To initiate and execute original research that addresses criminal justice policy questions relevant to California • To assist The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation agencies to implement and evaluate these practices

A Number of Research Projects Are Currently Underway • Global Positioning Satellite Monitoring of High Risk Sex Offenders in San Diego • Responding to the Prison Rape Elimination Act • Causes and Consequences of Parole Violations in California • Parolees with Mental Disorders: Toward Evidence-Based Practice • Improving Services for Mentally Ill Juveniles
A Number of Analyses Are Currently Underway • Rates of correctional supervision for juveniles and adults in California • What policymakers should know about juvenile justice in California • Companion piece to Petersilia report on adult corrections • Sampling of prison and parole programs currently in operation
Center Activities Include Dissemination • The Bulletin presents summary findings on research • Parole revocations in California • PREA preliminary findings • Working papers will present evidence-based summaries • Center materials appear at: http://ucicorrections.seweb.uci.edu
