Background • Carbon for sports teams is a combination of travel and stadium costs. • We look at Boston Red Sox from 1989-2009 to see how this changes over time. • This project focuses primarily on travel, because stadium carbon information not currently available.
Stadium-Overview • Oldest park in Major leagues. • Easy mass transit (MBTA) access. • Hard to drive to. • Most parking 20 minute walk away • Costs $30 per game • Only 6,000 spots • Dodger Stadium. • 16,000 spots near stadium • No mass transit • $15 per game
Travel Costs • Boston Red Sox use Boeing 767-300 to fly between games. • Used schedule information to estimate the flights taken. • Used approximations from average flights to calculate CO2 per season. • As shown CO2 mirrors miles flown.
Schedule-Background • Changes in flight miles per year must be due to schedule changes. • League added new teams in 1993 and 1998 • Strike in 1994-1995 • Interleague play starts 1998 • Unbalanced schedule starts 2001 • How do these changes influence the entire league travel? • How do these changes influence the entire league interest? • How do these changes influence the red sox? • To consider this we looked at the teams in MLB from 1989 to 2009. • Used attendance as a measure of interest.
What happens when a team moves? • The Montreal Expos moved to Washington D.C. before the 2005 season. • More interest, better location for travel.
Conclusions • Take home points • Urban Parks are generally good for low carbon footprints. • Remodeling current parks is also generally better for environment. • League should use CO2 as a consideration when making schedules. • Increase play within division • Interleague play should be against teams from same division • Also league should consider CO2 for expansion and relocation of teams. • Future Studies • Use Revenue rather than attendance is proxy of interest. • Consider television CO2 emissions. • Use data on energy used at games.
