Authority (Mt.21:23; 25) 23. And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority? 25. The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him? *Only 2 sources of authority (Divine > from God) (human > from men)
Authority I. Source of divine authority is not: A. What the preacher says: (2Tim.4:1-2) 1. I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; 2. Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
Authority I. Source of divine authority is not: A. What the preacher says: B. What creeds of men say: (Mt.21:25) 25. The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him?
Authority I. Source of divine authority is not: A. What the preacher says: B. What creeds of men say: (Mt.15:9) 9. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
Authority I. Source of divine authority is not: A. What the preacher says: B. What creeds of men say: C. What the Old Testament Says:
Authority I. Source of divine authority is not: C. What the Old Testament Says: (Heb.7:12) 12. For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.
Authority I. Source of divine authority is not: C. What the Old Testament Says: (Heb.8:6-7;13) 6. But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. 7. For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. 13. In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.
Authority I. Source of divine authority is not: C. What the Old Testament Says: (Heb.10:9) 9. Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
Authority I. Source of divine authority is not: C. What the Old Testament Says: 1. Tithing in the law of giving 2. Polygamy (more than one wife) 3. Instrumental music in worship
Authority I. Source of divine authority is not: C. What the Old Testament Says: 1. Attend the 3 yearly feast in Jerusalem. 2. Offer animal sacrifices for sins to push them forward. 3. Have a high priest from the tribe of Levi make atonement for you. 4. Keep the 7th day as a day of rest.
Authority I. Source of divine authority is not: C. What the Old Testament Says: OT was nailed to the cross! (Col.2:14) 14. Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
Authority I. Source of divine authority is not: C. What the Old Testament Says: (Rom.15:4) 4. For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
Authority II. OT examples teach us the need for divine authority: 1st: (Gen.4:1-7) Cain and Abel
Authority 1st: (Gen.4:1-7) Cain and Abel 1. And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. 2. And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. 3. And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. 4. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
Authority 1st: (Gen.4:1-7) Cain and Abel 5. But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. 6. And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? 7. If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
Authority 1st: (Gen.4:1-7) Cain and Abel (Heb.11:4) 4. By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. (Rom.10:17) 17. So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Authority 1st: (Gen.4:1-7) Cain and Abel 2nd: (2Chron.26:16-20) Uzziah the king
Authority 2nd: (2Chron.26:16-20) Uzziah the king 16. But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction: for he transgressed against the LORD his God, and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense. 17. And Azariah the priest went in after him, and with him fourscore priests of the LORD, that were valiant men: 18. And they withstood Uzziah the king, and said unto him, It appertaineth not unto thee, Uzziah, to burn incense unto the LORD, but to the priests the sons of Aaron, that are consecrated to burn incense: go out of the sanctuary; for thou hast trespassed; neither shall it be for thine honour from the LORD God.
Authority 2nd: (2Chron.26:16-20) Uzziah the king 19. Then Uzziah was wroth, and had a censer in his hand to burn incense: and while he was wroth with the priests, the leprosy even rose up in his forehead before the priests in the house of the LORD, from beside the incense altar. 20. And Azariah the chief priest, and all the priests, looked upon him, and, behold, he was leprous in his forehead, and they thrust him out from thence; yea, himself hasted also to go out, because the LORD had smitten him.
Authority 1st: (Gen.4:1-7) Cain and Abel 2nd: (2Chron.26:16-20) Uzziah the king 3rd: (2Sam.6:1-11) David and the ark of the covenant
Authority 3rd: (2Sam.6:1-7) David and the ark of the covenant 1. Again, David gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. 2. And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, whose name is called by the name of the LORD of hosts that dwelleth between the cherubims. 3. And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in Gibeah: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drave the new cart.
Authority 3rd: (2Sam.6:1-7) David and the ark of the covenant 4. And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab which was at Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark. 5. And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals. 6. And when they came to Nachon's threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it.
Authority 3rd: (2Sam.6:1-7) David and the ark of the covenant 7. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God. *David moved it in a way that God had not commanded!
Authority 3rd: (2Sam.6:1-7) David and the ark of the covenant (Ex.25:12-15) 12. And thou shalt cast four rings of gold for it, and put them in the four corners thereof; and two rings shall be in the one side of it, and two rings in the other side of it. 13. And thou shalt make stavesof shittim wood, and overlay them with gold.
Authority 3rd: (2Sam.6:1-7) David and the ark of the covenant (Ex.25:12-15) 14. And thou shalt put the staves into the rings by the sides of the ark, that the ark may be borne with them. 15. The staves shall be in the rings of the ark: they shall not be taken from it. It was to be carried by the sons of kohath (levites) using the poles!
Authority 3rd: (2Sam.6:1-7) David and the ark of the covenant (Num.4:15) 15. And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation. *Uzzah had no authority to touch the ark!
Authority *So we see that God wants things done the way that He has authorized them to be done! Why? God is the source of all authority not man.
Authority (Col.3:17) 17. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. **To do it in the name of Lord Jesus is to do it by His authority!
Authority (Heb.10:4) 4. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
