Statistics Canada data collection: • Process-produced data (e.g. births, deaths, marriages, imports, exports, annual data collection instruments, etc.) • Sample surveys (e.g. National survey of graduates, NLSCY, etc.) • Census of population (100% sample) • first conducted in 1666 • every 10 years 1871-1951 • every 5 years 1961-2001 (latest)

CANSIM - a brief overview • Canadian socio-economic information management system • begun in late 1960s • early 1970s, ca 60,000 time-series • by 2001, 800,000 time-series • now (12/11/02) 12,973,812 time-series

Census of population - overview Basic rule: detailed geography or detailed subject matter, but never both
Census of population - main products • documentation • Nation series & Dimensions series: detailed subject matter, less detailed geography • Profile files: univariate frequencies, all census variables in one file, general and detailed geog. • Basic summary tabulations: detailed geography, less detailed subject matter • geographic and geo-reference files
Census of population - formats • Pre-1996 • main products were print • selected files in STCs own software (C86, C91, XV) • 1996 and on • main products are electronic, only selected products are also in print • commercial software: Beyond 20/20 • WWW access to selected files on STC web site
E-stat: a brief history • early 1990s, concern about numeracy (LSUDA 1989 and IALS 1994) • Norwegian Social Science Data Archive (NSD) developed NSDstat for Norwegian high schools • E-stat is STC’s attempt to encourage introduction of statistics into high school curriculum • first E-stat on cd-rom, ca 1995 • by 1998, a WWW-application
