  4. Humanism Petrarch(1304-1374) Italian scholar & “Father” of Humanism

  5. Humanism • Goal: educate students to lead successful lives. • Involved studying the great civilizations of the past (Greeks & Romans). • Use science/rational thought to explain things; not religion. Statue of Petrarch Outside Uffizi Museum

  6. Printing & Reproducing • For centuries it was costly & time consuming to reproduce written works. • Mid-1400s a printing press was perfected-information can be spread VERY quickly. Vellum Bible

  7. Printing Press • A useful political tool • United people • People could read (Bible) for themselves Impossible(?) to overestimate its impact: Johannes Gutenberg (ca. 1400-1468)
