  2. Troubleshooting? • How to fix something when it’s not working properly (problem solving). Huddleston - Troubleshooting

Booting: to start up a computer and load its operating system • Cold Boot: starting/restarting your computer from no power • Turning on for the first time • Turn off, wait, turn back on • AKA Hard Boot • Warm Boot: restarting your computer while the power stays on • AKA Soft Boot Huddleston - Troubleshooting

  4. Troubleshooting Steps • Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete at the same time. • This will bring up the Windows Security Dialog Box. • Choose Task Manager. • This will bring up a list of all applications running. • Highlight the program that is “Not Responding” and End Task. • This will close only that program. Performing a Warm Boot Cont. • If the first try didn’t work, try again. • If it still doesn’t work, perform a soft boot. • If none of the above works, perform a cold boot. • Perform a forced shutdown (press and hold the on button.) • If a forced shutdown doesn’t work, unplug it and remove the battery and try again.   6. Other Computer Problems • Power is on, but nothing happens: • Check port connections and outlets. • Make sure everything is plugged in tightly and securely. • Cords should not be tightly wrapped or severely bent. Huddleston - Troubleshooting

  7. Contacting Tech Support • Never return a faulty machine without contacting the FRA Help Desk first. • Have the following info ready: • Product name, configuration number, serial number, and purchase date. • Conditions under which problem occurs. • Any errors messages. • Type of connected devices (if applicable). • Notes of what you’ve tried so far.   8. Printer Problems • Before printing check to make sure: • The power is on. • There is paper in the tray. • The printer is “On-Line.” • All cords are tightly and securely in place. Huddleston - Troubleshooting

Printer Problems cont. • If all of the above is fine, and there is still a printer error: • Go to Start-Printers and Faxes or use the printer icon on the task bar. • Double-click the checked printer. • Check settings in the printer window. • Clear any unnecessary print jobs from the queue.
