Energy production Virtual Stem house EDSGN 100 October 16, 2013 Section 008 Team 7 Victor Hagerstrom Kim Harmon Kenny Stevens Sashank Vanga
Description of design task • Design process • Evaluation • Prototype • Summary Table of contents
Designobjective To design and build a motivational and educational virtual STEM learning program to meet 6-8th grade state educational standards, with a focus on energy production subsystem, all in a profitable fashion.
Customer needs/ stakeholder information Stakeholders Customer needs assessment was described in business team presentation. More input will still be needed from stakeholders other than teachers, in order to properly gather all necessary information and construct a marketable product. • Faculty • Superintendent • School board • Principals • Parents • Students • Program engineers • Landfill operator • Legal council • Computer manufacturers
Specifications Table 1 *Educational objectives 3.3.8.A2 Describe renewable and non renewable energy resources. 3.4.8.E3 Examine how power systems are used to drive and provide propulsion to other technological products or systems.
Brainstorming Ideas Idea 1: Mobile Device Application Aim: To educate elementary school kids in terms of energy production through use of technology. Procedure: Create an interactive learning application in a touch capable mobile device like an iPad. Schools started using tablets in educating children, so an application that has educating capabilities could be designed and sold to schools.
Brainstorming Ideas Idea 2: Legos!! Aim: To educate elementary school kids in terms of energy production through use of hands-on activities. Procedure: Legos can be remodeled easily to form various shapes, in this case solar panels, windmills and other energy producers. Students can be showed how to make Lego models and be explained how the real structures produce energy.
Brainstorming Ideas Idea 3: Educational films Aim: To educate elementary school kids in terms of energy production Procedure: Short educational films that show various simple experiments that would explain energy production could be made and sold to schools.
Idea selection matrix Table 2
Concept Selected The design chosen was a variation on the mobile device program. Tablets would add an additional expense to schools that would plan on using our product. Instead, the design will be made into a computer program that can easily be installed onto the computers the school already owns. This will keep the interactivity of the original idea, while decreasing the cost.
