In the beginning of The Outsiders, Cherry accepts that the Socs and the greasers are very different people who just don’t mix, but a conflict with Dally helps to change her mind. When she meets Ponyboy at the movies, she asks, “What’s a nice, smart kid like you running around with trash like that for?” (23). She’s surprised to find out that a greaser could be anything other than a rough, dangerous hood. But when Johnny and Ponyboy stand up to Dally for her, she says, “You two are too sweet to scare anyone” (26). Cherry is beginning to question the greaser stereotype. When she finds out about Johnny’s painful encounter with the Socs, she is visibly upset. She tells Ponyboy, “All Socs aren’t like that. You have to believe me, Ponyboy. Not all of us are like that”(35). Cherry is starting to realize that both the Socs and the greasers are unfairly stereotyped by each other.
