Fillet Welds Unit 15
Objectives • Name the parts of a fillet weld. • Determine weld size and weld length by interpreting the fillet welding symbol. • Read and interpret a fillet welding symbol used for intermittent and staggered intermittent welds. • Determine the weld face contour of a fillet weld.
Fillet Weld • Approximately triangular • Actual throat • Shortest distance between weld root and face of weld • Affects strength of weld
Dimensions for Fillet Symbol • Dimension for arrow side fillet on arrow side of reference line • Weld size • Shown to left of weld symbol • Specified dimension is minimum size unless otherwise noted
Weld Length • Shown to right of weld symbol • Weld-all-around symbol • For all geometric shapes • Round parts • Length may be given in degrees
Hatching • Shows extent and location of fillet weld • Additional arrows used for abrupt changes in weld direction
Intermittent Fillet Welds • Intermittent weld • Broken by unwelded spaces • Pitch • Distance between centers of increments on one side of joint • Shown to right of length dimension • Staggered intermittent weld • Weld increments staggered on both sides of joint
Fillet Weld Contours • Specified when specific welded shape is desired • Flat • Concave • Convex • Indicated by contour symbol
Combination Weld Symbols • Other types of welds can be used with fillet welds • Fillet symbol and other weld symbol included on welding symbol
