Notes: Vocabulary In the Notes section of your 3-subject notebook, copy the definitions of the following literary terms: • Diction: The choice of words made by the author • Tone: The author’s attitude towards a subject • Author’s perspective: The unique combination of ideas, values, beliefs, and feelings that influences the way a writer looks at a topic • Mood: The atmosphere created by the author. This term applies to how the reader feels • Allusion: A brief or indirect reference to another book, object, circumstance, etc. in a literary work

  3. Discussion Questions • What is Holden Caulfield’s tone in Chapter 1? What mood does it create for you? • Do you feel bad for Holden because he was expelled from school? • What does Holden mean when he says that his brother D.B. is out in Hollywood "being a prostitute"? • Where is Holden as the story begins? • Where and what is Pencey Prep?

  4. Close Reading – Take Notes! • This is an opportunity for you to practice taking notes as we read a piece of text aloud as a group. As I highlight on the board, write down any key ideas we discuss in your notes in preparation to answer the discussion questions. You will be turning in the questions at the end of class, so please pay attention and do your best!

  5. Homework…it’s not so bad! Research a little about the life of the author, J.D. Salinger. In one or two paragraphs, answer the following question: How is J.D. Salinger’s life similar to that of his character, Holden Caulfield? What events in the author’s life might have influenced him to write this novel?
