Research Career AwardAdditional Instructions for Preparing Individual Research Career Award (RCA) Applications - "K" Series In addition, the eligibility criteria, support levels, and other important aspects of specific career awards, including availability, may depend on which NIH Institute or Center supports the award. For this reason, it is strongly recommended that applicants contact the program director of the appropriate awarding component prior to the preparation of an application. A list of program contacts is available in the general NIH program announcements for these programs (see the NIH Guide).

  14. R- Series • R 01 Research Project To support a discrete, specified, circumscribed project to be performed by the named investigator(s) in an area representing his specific interest and competencies. • R 03 Small Research Grants To provide research support specifically limited in time and amount for studies in categorical program areas. Small grants provide flexibility for initiating studies which are generally for preliminary short-term projects and are non-renewable. • R 21 Exploratory/Developmental Grants To encourage the development of new research activities in categorical program areas. (Support generally is restricted in level of support and in time.) • R 23 New Investigator Research Awards To support basic and clinical studies so that newly trained investigators might remain active during the developmental stage of their career.

  16. Minority Supplements • Minority Candidates must be a US Citizen. • One Applicant per grant. • Supplements cannot exceed the current project period of the parent grant. • Each institute has different instructions.

  17. APPLICATION DO’S • Pursue original science. This is an area that study sections are most concerned about. Avoid work that can be identified with your mentors. • KISS - Emphasize, focus and simplify.Provide well-focused research plan. Do not let your ideas wander from the main theme. • Show your proposal to a colleague for feedback on clarity and scientific merit.

  18. APPLICATIONS DON’TS • Don’t force a study into a biomedical format just to get it accepted by the NIH. Avoid contrived projects • Don’t be overly ambitious. Project a realistic amount of work. • Don’t assume that the reviewers will know what you mean, be explicit
