IB Extended Essay CHEMISTRY
BEFORE YOU BEGIN!!! READ THE EXTENDED ESSAY Guidelines CAREFULLY
Extended Essay Requirements • 40-hours • 4000-word maximum; no minimum • 300-word abstract • Supervisor submits predicted grade and supervisor’s report • Total assessment points 0-36 • “E” grade in either ToK or the EE means student must get 28 pts to be awarded diploma
Choice of Subject • Choice of subject should depend on: • Your interest/enthusiasm • Your university plans • Your “prior knowledge/performance” • You need a good title and focused research question • Remember: it’s only 40 hours, 4000 words and it only counts for a maximum of 2 points on the diploma…
The Importance of Deadlines • It is VITAL to stick to established deadlines: • Students put themselves under very considerable time pressures if they don’t stick to them – the “second year” is very busy, with IAs, college applications, etc, etc… • Last-minute revisions are rarely well-done • Do not aim at perfection! This may be the first time you are doing a serious research essay. Fortunately, the IB is also not expecting perfection……
How much help can I give? • This is your( student’s) EE, not mine! • However, it’s supposed to be a learning experience, so: • I will correct any tendency to drift off topic in the research process • Suggest primary/secondary sources I think may be valuable • Suggest you to look again at anything which might lead into serious errors • I will not dictate specific modifications to the RQ or topic, only suggest that you look at it again and take into account certain factors I may suggest…
The Bottom Line • Did you learn from the process of researching and writing their EEs? • Did you enjoy the process? • Did you meet the minimum requirements to satisfy the IB examiners? If the answer to all three is “yes”, then you’ve done a good job!
