A GRADUATE CAPABILITY-FOCUSED TOP DOWN APPROACH FOR DEVELOPING THIRD LEVEL PROGRAMMES Professor Saleem Hashmi School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Dublin City University, Ireland 9th September, 2008
Engineering Programmes are developed to cater for the needs of industry and enterprise. As such, it is vital that engineering programmes produce graduates with appropriate technical and professional attributes that industry needs. 9th September, 2008
Outcome based Programme Design Programme produces graduates with prescribed attributes (Programme Learning Outcomes). 9th September, 2008
Concept of Learning Outcomes (LOs) In short LOs are the ability to perform some task or gain enabling knowledge base. 9th September, 2008
Top Down Programme Development Step 1: Defining Programme Learning Outcomes (PLO) based on core competences. Each core competence usually comprises of one or more Programme Learning Outcomes.
Top Down Programme Development Step 2: Identifying Specific Competences and to identify supporting knowledge base for the Essential modules. The corresponding modules and their learning outcomes are then identified relatively easily.
Top Down Programme Development Remaining peripheral knowledge base which prepare engineers for the society, business, ethics and environment are then selected as appropriate.
Example of Module Learning Outcomes • Module: CAD/CAM • LOs: Able to produce detail drawing of parts/components using CAD facilities -Able to select appropriate materials. -Able to generate codes and communicate CAD files to CNC machine for producing the parts/components. -Able to estimate the production cost of the part. - -
