  3. Technique Category • The Hines Break technique is considered to be among the social graces. • Handshake procedure, opening doors, and seating sighted guides.

  4. What is a Hines Break? The Hines Break is an O&M technique which is a systematic method of disengaging unwanted or incorrect sighted guide assistance.

  5. How to do the Hines Break • The students responds to the guide’s pressure by relaxing the grasped arm and raising it to his opposite shoulder, keeping feet stationary • With his free hand, the student grasp the guide’s wrist while verbalizing his intentions. • To decline aid- the student pulls guides wrist forward until the guide loses contact. The student doesn’t assume the proper grip for sighted guide technique. The guide’s wrist is released • To accept aid- the student will assume the proper grip for sighted guide.

  6. Hines Break examples • To decline- “No, thank you. I appreciate the offer.” To accept- “Thank you. I will follow you.”

  7. Hines Break Benefits • Promotes self advocacy • Promotes greater independency • Promotes gracious social behavior
