  2. Through navigation, people came to New Zealand in canoes, waka, aeroplanes. • People navigate space • You are going on a journey to yourself, with ‘signs’ along the way to help you

  3. The paddle was used in early vessels to propel the vessel through the water • For this unit, the paddle will symbolise the ‘motivation’ to paint about yourself.

  4. Paddles were often decorated to symbolise things that were meaningful to the people who used them like this paddle and the ones in the next slides. The artist who work with paddles have each put their own ideas and interests on their work.

  5. These are traditional paddles with worked into them by carving

  6. The artist LeaneCuly, paints on old paddles and oars. • She also uses her designs in textile designs

  7. Here are some of her interests. • Now lets see what she does with this subject matter on her oars

Fa'afetai Amituana'i is an Auckland based artist who graduated with a Bachelor of Design from Auckland's Unitec in 2002 and now teaches Art at One Tree Hill College • While his work now spans many mediums, it is painting which has been Fa'afetai's long time passion and primary form of self-expression, one closely bound to his personal experiences of being Samoan living in New Zealand

  18. Task 3: Mark Making Study Mark Making: In this work markmakingwas used by Aboriginals in image making. Often used within a design or pattern. Images can be found on musical instruments inside caves, and more recently as pictures.

  20. PrimaryColors Primary colors are not mixed from other elements and they generate all other colors. • Red • Yellow • Blue

  21. SecondaryColors By mixing two primary colors, a secondary color is created. • . • Red + Yellow = Orange • Yellow+ Blue = Green • Blue+ Red = Purple

  23. What is TonE? …………………………… …………………………… …………………………… LIGHT DARK Shade in your grid from left to right. Each number from 1 – 10 represents the layers of applied pencil used to make the shades of tone. Example: 1 = 1 layer of pencil 2 = 2 layers of pencil 3 = 3 layers of pencil When drawing in tone consider the direction of the light. For instance Look at the right side of the red apple in the picture. It is a dark tone or shade of red. The lightest part of the orange apple is the front as this is the lightest shade of orange. Colour the tone sheet with graded tones then generate one tonal image.
