March Revolution 1917 • 10,000 women demanded “Peace and Bread” • Czar Nicholas orders guards to break up riots and shoot if necessary. • Guards join the rioters • Czar steps down without support • Provisional gov’t is established • End of 300 year old Romanov dynasty

Lenin and the Bolsheviks • Bolsheviks were a political party dedicated to revolution • Goal: destroy capitalist system and overthrow the provisional government • Championed the views of the people • Promised to end war • Land to the peasants • Factories would be controlled by committees of workers • slogan- “ Peace, Land, Bread”
