However, this quest for pleasure was ofen accompanied by a sense of inner despair and emptiness • F. Scott Fitzgerald captured both the gaiety and the emptiness of the time in his writing • Said to be the “voice of his generation” • He coined the phrase “The Jazz Age”
Fitzgerald’s Life • F Scott Fitzgerald was born in 1896 in Minnesota • Was a distant relative of the composer of “The Star Spangled Banner” • Family had little money but big social aspirations
Fitzgerald went to Princeton but failed to graduate because of his “Lifestyle”= too much partying • So enlisted in the Army in 1917 • Wrote his first novel in 1920 called “This Side of Paradise” – it was an instant success
With the instant money and fame was able to convince Zelda Sayre to marry him • Zelda was used to a life of wealth and extravagance • The couple mingled with the rich and famous-attending countless parties and spending money recklessly
Despite his wild lifestyle, Fitzgerald remained a productive writer • His most successful novel The Great Gatsby was published in 1925 • However, in 1929, with the stock market crash his life changed drastically
His reputation as a writer started to go downhill • He had financial difficulties • Wife suffered several nervous breakdowns and was institutionalized • Fitzgerald died after suffering a heart attack at age 44 in 1940; Zelda died in 1948
