  3. What did the Europeans Want? • New faster routes • Spices, silk, gold, jewels • Spread the Roman Catholic or other religions • Establish colonies • (a place ruled by another country)

Christopher Columbus • From Spain – looking for Indies (islands of Southeast Asia) • King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella • Granted money for 3 • ships • October 12, 1492 - arrival • Tribe called Taino lived on the islands • Bahama Island of San Salvador- Claimed by Spain …They ought to make good and skilled servants, for they repeat very quickly whatever we say to them… I will take six of them to Your Highness when I depart… C.C. 1493

  5. More Europeans to Follow • 1519 – Cortes from Spain -arrived in Mexico -conquer the Aztec -claim land “New Spain” -establish colony

  8. NEW SPAIN • Spanish build an empire • Take over Tenochtitlan from Aztecs = Mexico City • Grow from Mexico City to North America and South America • Use Indians and Africans as slaves

  9. Strait of Anian (ah nee AHN) or The Northwest Passage • Still looking for a way to Asia from Europe • 1542 – Cabrillo traveled west up to California from Mexico colony • Found San Diego Bay and continued North • First European to explore California

  10. California Voyages • 1577 - Francis Drake from England • Pirated the Spanish and traded with the Miwok • 1595 – Sebastin Rodriquez Cermeno • 1602 – Sebastian Vizcaino (vees kah ee noh) • Left California alone for next 150 years
