What Are the Global Directions in Learning? • From Learning Information to Learning to Learn - The system must place greater emphasis on the learning of skills over the learning of content. • From Data to Discovery - Students must play a greater role in discovering their own content so the measurement of success will be related to how they find, use, and develop accurate, relevant content. • From One Size Fits All to Tailored Learning - As students progress they will increasingly access and engage with their own content,attheir own pace of learning and take an increasing role in charting a path best suited to those talents, interests and abilities. On a day to day basis this will require a more project-based or problem-based approach and will help to keep the students engaged and interested in learning.
From Testing to Assess to Assessing to Learn: the use of assessment practices that promote learning • From Classroom Learning to Lifelong Learning - Lifelong learning can be encouraged by incorporating aspects of a student’s life outside of school into their education. The education system must evolve from being the focal point of education to more of a base camp for learning. • From Meaning for Adults to Meaning for Students: students are much more likely to engage in learning THEY find meaningful
Shifting Roles of all Participants • From Passive Student to Active Learner – students taking more responsibility for charting their own path • From Parent as Supporter to Parent as Participant parents can be more involved with their children’s education by guiding decisions, helping to overcome challenges, and supporting learning out- comes. • From Teacher as Lecturer to Teacher as Guide - The role of the teacher switches to that of a learning coach or coordinator and it is no longer a requirement for them to know more information than the student on every topic.
District Directions • Broad consultation on BC Ed Plan and global trends in education. • Identification and Exploration of Innovative Practices in SD 8 and around the province. • Pilot different ways to organize learning environments. • Engage communities in answering the questions of “Why” and “How” for learning. • Continuing to explore powerful and meaningful approaches to adult learning.
District Student Expectations • Academic Success – each student will possess the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for academic success and be effectively prepared for life, work and further learning. All learners will be challenged according to their full potential. All students will develop a confidence to advocate for their personal learning needs. • Creativity and Imagination – each student will identify and actively develop individual gifts, talents and interests in order to be actively and meaningfully engaged in learning.
Citizenship – each student will be a responsible citizen by being an informed and involved member in her local, national and global community – within the context of our diverse rural environment. • Resiliency– each student will learn responsible and effective means of self-advocacy. Each student will be aware of stigmas as challenges to overcome and opportunities for growth. Each student will understand their own social, emotional, learning and mental health challenges and articulate a means to see support to mitigate these challenges. Each student will have the opportunity to identify with role models, and define who they want to become.
