Current Issues in External Assessment Standards alignment, levels 1, 2, 3 • NZC (2007) / Standards • 1 hour assessment per standard • Single achievement criterion at each level • Subject and Course endorsement • Exemplars
Current Issues in External Assessment Grade-score marking • N0, N1, N2: Not achieved • A3, A4: low and high Achieved • M5, M6: low and high Merit • E7, E8: low and high Excellence • Better judgement around grade boundaries • Better match of student ability and final grade • Allows all evidence to count • Gives a mechanism for aggregating question grades
Current Issues in External Assessment Grade-score marking • Assessment schedule defines evidence for N0 to E8 for each question • Cut-score meeting – decides grade boundaries based on comparison of candidate work and standard • For a 3 question exam paper, max score is 24. • Minimum total score for A is 7 • Minimum for M is 13 • Minimum for E is 19 • but cut scores can be set higher

Current Issues in External Assessment MCAT Dates • 1 August – schools nominate day(s) and order papers • 11, 12 Sept – school PNs receive papers • 18, 19 Sept – students sit MCAT • 24 Sept – assessment schedule online • 24 Sept to 29 Oct – schools enter provisional results • 23 Nov to 7 Dec – final results entry
Current Issues in External Assessment Scholarship review Statistics • Based on the 4 Statistics AOs of the NZC • 1. Carry out investigations using the statistical enquiry cycle • 2: Make inferences from surveys and experiments • 3: Evaluate a wide range of statistical reports • 4: Investigate situations that involve elements of chance • 7 standards ( 3.8 – 3.14)
