The Importance of Team Boundaries

Team boundaries are an important concept. Studies have found that many, if not most, teams have fuzzy boundaries resulting in a lack of clarity about who is part of the effort. That can have significant productivity effects – and not good ones! These slides look at the problem and offer some specific suggestions for how to improve how teams manage boundaries.

  2. There Are 2 Types of Teams In The World… We carefully cultivated this team! Of course we’re on a team because, well, look around – everything that happens here is a team. Right? I’m on 5 teams. Or is 6 teams? Which would you think works better?

  3. Studies Have Looked For Team Boundaries… At least 25% of team members aren’t sure who is on the team! No, actually it’s more like 10% do know who is on the team! Frequently they are hard to find!

  10. Teamwork Should Be Fractal I know what my role is! I’m working on a task! I can see who my teammates are! At any level of detail, the boundaries should be clear.
