Economy • Member of the European Union • Trade focused on the local market and the West, particularly Germany and the United Kingdom. • Estonia has styled itself as the gateway between East and West and aggressively pursued economic reform and integration with the West.
History • Estonians resisted the assaults of Vikings, Danes, Swedes, and Russians before the 13th century. • In 1346, the Danes, who possessed northern Estonia, sold the land to the Teutonic Knights of Germany, who already possessed Livonia (southern Estonia and Latvia). • The Teutonic Knights reduced the Estonians to serfdom.
Climate • The climate is maritime, wet, with moderate winters and cool summers. • Temperate climate • Warm summers and severe winters • When it falls it stays though, and there tends to be a layer of snow constantly on the ground between December and March. • Summertime brings unexpected rain showers, so an umbrella and light raincoat are recommended.
Culture • Due to its history and geography, Estonia's culture has been influenced by the traditions of the adjacent area's various Finnic, Baltic, Slavic and Germanic peoples as well as the cultural developments in the former dominant powers Sweden and Russia. • Traditionally, Estonia has been seen as an area of rivalry between western and eastern Europe on many levels.
Land • Estonia boasts over 1,500 lakes, numerous bogs, and 3,794 kilometers of coastline marked by numerous bays, straits, and inlets. • Tallinn's Muuga port offers one of Europe's finest warm-water harbor facilities. • Estonia's strategic location has precipitated many wars that were fought on its territory between other rival powers at its expense.
