  1. Ecosystems Around the World Teachers Students

  2. For Teachers Objective Audience Environment Here is an interactive power point over ecosystems around the world designed for your students!

  3. After the completion of this interaction power point over the different habitats around the world, students should be able to give a group speech over a chosen habitat. Also, with the knowledge gained, students should be successful in the quiz scoring at least an 80%. Objective

  4. 4th-6th graders • Middle class, suburban elementary school • Students that benefit from visual/hands-on activities • Students who need extra help in learning about the ecosystems Audience This interactive lesson is intended for:

  5. Individually for lesson and quiz • Groups of 3-4 students for group activity • A computer with internet access at: school, library, home, etc. Environment Students should be completing this activity:

  6. For Students Today we will be discovering different ecosystems around the world! Skip to: Group Activity Quiz EXPLORE!

  7. Buttons Key Main Menu Back to Ecosystems Back Next Slide

  8. There are six different ecosystems around the world that are made up of many different climates, landscapes, plants, and animals. Today, we will explore the six ecosystems! Which one do you live in? What are ecosystems? Click here to watch a video!

  9. Ecosystems Around the World Forest Desert Grassland Rainforest Taiga Tundra

  10. Desert Two different types: plants animals HOT RAINFALL MAP COLD

  11. Plants cactus brittle bush yucca tree mojave aster

  12. Animals armadillo lizard sidewinder camel coyote

  13. Average Rainfall

  14. Deserts in the United States!

  15. Desert Facts • temperatures vary • dry climate • little rain • deserts are found on all six continents

  16. plants animals Four Seasons: Winter Spring Summer Fall MAP Forest

  17. white birch american beech Plants carpet moss lady fern

  18. deer black bear Animals coyote squirrel

  19. Forests Around the World

  20. Seasons Changing Tilt of the earths axis causes the changes in the seasons. If the axis didn’t tilt we wouldn’t have changes in seasons. Instead, the area near the equator would receive most of the sun. Additionally, the north and south hemisphere would be cold all year round.

  21. Grassland Three different types: tall mixed short plants map

  22. Grasslands in the United States!

  23. Plants wildflowers grasses

  24. Rainforest Two different types: tropic temperate plants animals MAP

  25. Plants bamboo coconut tree jambu bougainvillea

  26. Animals toucan chimpanzee bengal tiger elephant

  27. Rainforests Around the World

  28. Because of the location being near the equator the rainforest: • has hundreds of animal, plant and tree species • Moist and warm • Very green because of the vast amount of plants Tropical Rainforest Facts

  29. C O O O O L temperatures Found in the United States along the west coast line from northern California up to Alaska Rainfall is more than 100 inches per year Temperate Rainforest Facts

  30. Taiga Largest Ecosystem!! plants animals MAP

  31. coniferous trees: Plants pine spruce fir

  32. American black bear bald eagle Animals red fox snowshoe rabbit

  33. Map of Taiga Large portion spreading across Asia, Canada, and Europe

  34. Tundra plants animals B R R R R . . . MAP

  35. Plants bearberry labradortea pasque flower arctic moss

  36. Animals arctic fox grizzly bear polar bear snowy owl

  37. Tundra Map

  38. Tundra Endangered species? GLOBAL WARMING The earth heats up because of what we call a “green house effect.” Gases in our atmosphere trap heat and light from the sun causing temperatures to rise. The rising temperatures cause the snow and ice in the tundra to melt. This ruins the environment that the species live in and puts their lives in danger or even kills them. It also puts them at risk for becoming an endangered species.

  39. GROUP ACTIVITY Divide into six even groups. Assign one of the ecosystems to each group Have the groups give a brief summary in front of the class on assigned ecosystem

  40. QUIZ TIME!! Let’s see how much you’ve learned about the six ecosystems. 1. Read each question carefully. 2. Choose the best possible answer for the questions. 3. If you get the question wrong, pay attention to the hints and go back to try again! 4. Take your time and GOODLUCK.  Directions:

  41. QUESTION #1 This ecosystem gets the least amount of rainfall: A. DESERT B. TAIGA C. RAINFOREST D. GRASSLAND

  42. CORRECT! AWESOME JOB! A IS THE RIGHT ANSWER. GOOD THINKING! Next Question!

  43. OOPS! TRY AGAIN. HINT: this ecosystem is very green because of the large amount of plants. There are also hundreds of different plant and animal species there too. TRY AGAIN!

  44. QUESTION #2 The largest ecosystem is: A. DESERT B. FORESTS C. TAIGA D. TUNDRA

  45. CORRECT! EXCELLENT! C IS THE RIGHT ANSWER. GOOD THINKING! Next Question!

  46. OOPS! TRY AGAIN. HINT: This ecosystem spreads across a large portion of Asia, Europe, and Canada. TRY AGAIN!

  47. QUESTION #3 The tilt in the earth’s axis causes the: A. EARTHQUAKES B. FOUR SEASONS C. GLOBAL WARMING D. LOTS OF RAINFALL

  48. CORRECT! GREAT JOB! B IS THE RIGHT ANSWER. GOOD THINKING! Next Question!

  49. OOPS! TRY AGAIN. HINT: if the earths axis didn’t tilt, there would not be an even change of sunlight throughout the hemispheres during the year. TRY AGAIN!

  50. QUESTION #4 The two types of rainforests are: A. TEMPERATE AND TROPICAL B. HOT AND COLD C. SNOW AND SUN D. DRY AND WET
