Seamless Transport: Making Connections Making Connections • Premise: • More seamless linkages between transport systems, networks, users and infrastructure can improve the efficiency, sustainability, accessibility, safety and security of transport, with important benefits for mobility and trade.
Connecting systems, people, markets, secrots & ideas Connectivity appears in all aspects of transport Connections • Connecting systems – Implementing advanced technologies and new practices to make seamless linkages between modes, and improve information sharing among operators and users. • Connecting people – Improving urban and inter-urban mobility, making transport more accessible, optimising active transport, implementing electronic ticketing and information-sharing, and increasing the flow through passenger terminals. • Connecting markets – Smoothing end-to-end journeys, integrating supply chains, improving border crossings and harmonising standards. • Connecting sectors – Better integrating transport with energy, finance, urban planning, tourism and other areas. • Connecting ideas – Integrating new technologies and thinking into transport, including the wireless revolution, social networking, Intelligent Transport Systems, and new approaches to financing and management.
Connecting systems, people, markets, sectors & ideas Paradigm shift in transport perception • From today’s perception as a (self-contained and isolate) rigid capability for moving people and goods from one point to another over fixed schedules • To tomorrow’s concept of an integral and transparent flexible service as a mobility enabler in people’s daily activities and facilitator of connectivity in all levels of human interactions
Systsems of Systems Concepts SoS: Systems of Systems concept • Shift of paradigm requires the concept of a ‘glue’ that will seat on top of existing systems, such as: • Journey Planners • Booking & Reservation systems • Schedulers • Ticketing systems & e-shopping systems • Traffic & social event & news systems • Social networks and ride sharing systems • … • To provide seamless and transparent access to raw and processed information to assist the end user with her/his mobility needs in the context of her/his daily activities across spatial (geographic) and temporal boundaries

Systsems of Systems Concepts The SoS “glue” consists of: • An Internet portal & mobile i/f for users • Basic components for adaptive real time scheduling of multi-modal journeys • Interface support for service providers and users with special needs • Tools for integration with 3rd party software services • Interface support of mobile devices and some other components • Journey exchange interface • Real time incidents exchange interface • Interfacing with fares, ticketing & booking systems
Core functionalities of a SoS intermodal J.P. Platform Core functionalities of a SoS intermodal J.P. Platform • Manage transportation ontology and specific versions of this ontology for users • Specify user-specific requirements for long and/or short journeys • Generate multi-modal transportation schedules based on user requirements using online information from existing e-maps and routing systems, time-tables for different legs of journeys, booking and ticketing and other systems • Continuously monitor execution of journeys in real time • Generate warning messages in case of accidents or growing gap between plan and reality • Adapt journey schedules by events or warnings in real time or interactively by user • Interact with user to match resulting schedule of journey with his requirements • Optimize journey schedules based on updates forecasts if time is available • Generalize user experience for learning and improving scheduling results
