LO 1: Describe clinical research and the research process steps Before you start your research at WRNMMC, you need to do the following THREE steps: Step 1: Obtaining a DKO/AKO account Step 2: Registering with IRBNet, e-portal for publications and protocolsubmission. Step 3: Completion of CITI training Research Course

  6. Step 1: Obtaining a DKO/AKO account AKO/DKO platform for research purposes What is AKO? Army Knowledge Online (AKO) is the world's largest and secure electronic platform. AKO is currently serving over 2.26 million users. What is DKO? Defense Knowledge Online (DKO) is an information sharing network required by the Department of Defense to support secure access to information (portal). DKO is using AKO as a platform. Research Course

  7. MANY Benefits of DKO 1. Universal Email in the .mil environment. 2. Virtual workspace (telework) any time especially in times of national disaster (Sept 11, Pandemic, etc) or exercises (example: DCO) 3. Virus and Spam scanning for over 3 Billion messages per year. 4. Provides access to over 2K free training courses via JKO, etc. 5. Use AKO/DKO credentials to access MyPay, Tricare Online and over 1,200 other DOD applications that use AKO/DKO SSO services. 6. If you have Internet access, you can access AKO/DKO securely from anywhere at any time 7. Centralized Helpdesk (open 24/7) supporting 2.26M users and over 1,200 DoD applications. 8. Use AKO/DKO Portal as a Virtual Thumb Drive ensuring files and folders needed are available regardless of location. 9. Social capabilities such as milSUITE allow you to find new people working on similar projects or with similar interests. 10. Communicate with anyone in DoD via IM, eMail, video messaging. 11. It is a DoD-wide web-based networking solution for all your research management, compliance and oversight needs. Located on AKO/DKO platform at: https://www.us.army.mil/suite/page/596540 IRBNet IRBNet is the industry leading software, a robust set of electronic tools supporting the management, submission, review and oversight of our research protocols. Next steps: 4-5 The entire research writing process can be divided into easily manageable and clear steps: STEP 4: Develop a Research Question Select a topic Discuss Research Ideas Find Sources to support your ideas STEP 5: Submit your proposal via Proposal Approval Funding (if needed) Research Course

Step 4: Develop Research QuestionGood research question: could the "FINER" criteria be applied to it?F- Feasible.  Is the question answerable?  Do you have access to all the materials you will need to do the study?  Do you have access to enough subjects?  Will you have enough time and money?  Do you have the expertise to do this study or can you collaborate with someone who does?I- Interesting.  The question has to be interesting to the investigator, but should also be interesting to others.N- Novel.  Has this study been done before?  Does it add to the current body of medical knowledge?E- Ethical.  Risk/benefit ratio? Can the study be done with a minimal risk?  Will an IRB approve the study?R- Relevant.  Will it further medical science?  Will the results change clinical practice, health policy or point towards further avenues of research?If your question fails on any one of these 5 criteria, it is probably not worth putting much effort into.
