  3. What do we know about plastic? • Plastic is a man made material

  4. What do we know about plastic? • It can be made into almost any shape!

  5. What do we know about plastic? • Most plastics are strong, long-lasting, and lightweight.

  6. What do we know about plastic? • Plastics can be made in many colours.

  7. What do we know about plastic? • It is made out of natural materials such as wood, coal, oil

  8. What do we know about plastic? • There are about 50 main types of plastic!

  9. What do we know about plastic? • Plastic is cheap to produce, light, durable and does not break easily

  10. What do we know about plastic? One plastic bag may take anything between 200–1000 years to decompose! Items made out of plastic do not break down!

  11. What do we know about plastic? Plastics are very useful, but they can also cause many problems for the environment. Lots of plastic waste winds up in the oceans, where it can hurt animals. • A seal is tangled up in a fishing net on an island in the Pacific Ocean.

  12. How is plastic made? • http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/clips/zsys34j http://10.152.30.27/espresso/modules/s1_materials/plastic3.html?source=search-all-KS1-all-all&source-keywords=plastic

  13. How Plastic is Made Scientists are working on ways to make plastic from natural substances in order to make it more biodegradable. Most plastic is made in a similar way.

  14. How Plastic is Made Plastic is made from oil, natural gas or wood. Special things called hydrogen and carbon atoms are taken from them.

  15. How Plastic is Made A refinery ‘cracks’ these large hydrocarbons into smaller ones called ‘monomers’

  16. How Plastic is Made The oil or gas is sent to a chemical plant (like a factory) where the monomers are joined into long strings called polymers. (Think of a monomer as a train carriage and a polymer as a long train with lots of carriages.) The plant (factory) makes sacks of resin in the form of powder and pellets.

  17. How Plastic is Made The powder or pellets are taken to a plastic factory where things are added to change the colour and type of plastic. The plastic is then moulded into its final shape.

  18. L.I: To identify items made of plastic. Cut out pictures and stick them in correct column. Plastic Not Plastic

  19. L.I: To describe the properties of plastic durable lightweight strong
