Introduction • Sources of law in occupational health and safety : • Acts of parliament • Regulation : the most important source of occupational health law
International law • ILO (international Labour Organization) • An important source of International law for occupational health • Was founded in 1919 • Consist of representatives of national government, employers and workers organization • Its aim is to improve international labour standards including occupational health and safety
Labour Union • The most important force in promoting safety protection and decent working condition for all workers • US : labour movement • Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) • Promote workers’ right
Unions have directed more attention to occupational health and safety through • collective bargaining agreements • Hiring of health professional , workplace and safety committees, educational program • Support epidemiologic study
The role of union • Is to represent and pursue the collective interest of workers • Wages • Hours • Benefits • Condition of employment including health and safety • Peace, justice and the quality of life
Workers belong to unions for a variety reasons • Two important reason are • To have input about their working conditions • To ha representation ensuring that they will be treated fairly at the workplace
Applying Union principles to health and safety • Union for Political action, collective bargaining • The principles of union are : 1. The right to protection unions advocate for safety programs that identify and effectively control hazards 2. The right to participate and act union advocate for the right of workers to participate fully in all aspects of workplace health and safety program 3 The right to know worker have the right to understand the information related to occupational health and safety program
