The Carolingian Empire • After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Frankish Kingdom was established in France. • But the kings were weak and they handed power to thepalace butlers (=mayordomos de palacio). • Charles Martel, who defeated the Muslims in Poitiers (France), was one of the most importants butlers.
The Carolingian Dinasty The son of Charles Martel, Pippin the short, of the Carolingian Dinasty, became king. The son of Pippin the short was Charlemagne (Carlomagno), who wanted to restore the Western Roman Empire.
The Carolingian Dinasty Charlemagne conquered vast territories… Because of this he was crowned by the Pope as the new Emperor of the West in the year 800.
Life in the Carolingian Empire ECONOMY and SOCIETY • The main economic activities were agriculture and stockbreeding (=ganadería). • In the country, landlords dominated over lands and peasants (=campesinos) • The trade was very slow because communication networks had deteriorated • CULTURE • Charlemagne created schools in cathedrals and monasteries. The most important school was the Academy of Aquisgrane. • The monks copied books by hand
- Charlemagne died in 814, leaving the Empire to his son Louis the Pious (Luis el Piadoso) - Louis the Pious, with the treaty of Verdun (843) divided the Empire among his three sons: Charles, Lothair, and Louis This was the end of the Carolingian Empire.
