National Impact of Reapportionment June 2, 2011 “As capitals across the country tackle the contentious work of redrawing state legislative districts, one sure loser will be rural representation.” “In many states, the rural areas are simply growing less quickly than urban and suburban areas. In Georgia, for example, the Atlanta region appears likely to take control of a majority in the legislature.”
2010 Georgia Census Data Explained • From 2000 – 2010, Georgia’s population increased by 1.5 million people • Current population is approximately 9.7 million • Atlanta accounted for 54.4% of the state’s population in 2010 • Atlanta accounted for 68% of the state’s population growth in the last decade.
What Happened? State House Reapportionment • Due to population shift from rural to urban, the number of districts in rural Georgia have decreased • 11 new House districts have currently serving Representatives • 5 districts in Metro Atlanta; 6 outside metro Atlanta • 4/11 districts have joined currently-serving Republicans • Open districts (no incumbent currently serving): 13 • HD 2, 23, 26, 63, 66, 92, 93, 98, 103, 111, 119, 177
